Using Flash MX in Primary and Secondary Schools
A new price structure which favours Primary Schools has just been announced by Macromedia.
Studio MX which includes Flash MX, Dreamweaver MX, Fireworks MX and FreeHand MX is now available (June 2003) to
Primary Schools for £299 for the software including 17 licences
which will enable a whole class of 30 to use Flash using 15 computers (sharing), with two licences to spare for teachers - to use at home
This comes in addition to the existing deals for Secondary Schools who can get a package for the same software : -
Studio MX plus a site licence for - £1850 for schools less than 500 and
£2250 for schools over 500
These package deals for schools can be obtained from numerous software companies in the UK including Pugh Computers, Phoenix, Civica and many more.
Send a school order to the chosen company and they will send the package plus invoice to the school. For those living in other countries I suggest you contact your local Macromedia Education rep. for similar deals! I'd be surprised if they are not available.
Here are some examples of what can be done with edited filming from digital cameras with Flash MX:-
"The People of Barrow" and "Barrow people like talking. . " which can be accessed here
As you can also see on this site there are many, many projects that you can do with Flash using templates that enable a whole mixed ability class from Year 2 upwards to succeed at the level of ability of each individual whether they are very able or special needs. All have an enthusiastic time.
If you'd like to give Flash a try for a term with a class, before taking the plunge a CD is available to help you get started for £15 including lessons in the basics of Flash, templates and a 90 day trial of Flash 4.
Training courses are run for teachers from both Primary and Secondary Schools - contact Geoff Dellow at flash@tygh.co.uk
A support group also exists for teachers using Flash in the classroom with shared information on projects across the world.
